  We will discuss variational identities associated with spectral problems of soliton equations and give applications to Hamiltonian structures of zero curvature equations yielding soliton equations. Illustrative examples are the AKNS hierarchy, the Volterra lattice hierarchy and the super AKNS hierarchy. The resulting Hamiltonian structures guarantee the existence of infinitely many symmetries and conservation laws.
