Stirling permutations were defined by Gessel and Stanley. A Stirling permutation is a permutation of the multiset {1,1, 2, 2..n,n} such that for each i, the elements occuring between the two occurrences of
i are larger than i. Recently, the number of ascents have been studied by Bona, and later by Janson. We consider generalized Stirling permutations and relate them with certain families of increasing trees, which allows to discuss several parameters in Stirling permutations by analyzing their counterparts in the corresponding tree family. Amongst others, we present a limit theorem for the number of j-ascents in generalized Stirling permutations. In order to describe the (asymptotic) behaviour of several parameters of interests, we study three (generalized) Polya urn models using various methods.
