  Abstract
  Hessian locally linear embedding (HLLE) is a manifold learning method which exhibits prominent performance for the “Swiss roll with a hole”. Its original idea however is sophisticated and abstruse. We will introduce a new interpretation of its mechanism. Based on this new understanding, we then propose a new method called tangential locally linear embedding. It is much simpler and more robust than HLLE.
