  This t is a non-technical talk, suited for students (graduate and undergraduate). It gives a broad outline, of the background thought in mathematical society before the relativity was invented. It tries to explain how Riemann, Klein, Killing Lie and their followers thought about geometry, symmetry and their relationship with the physical space, each with his own unique insight shed towards further understanding of these issues.
