  Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of beat-to-beat variations of the R-R intervals over a time period ranging from a few minutes to 24 hours. It is generally believed that HRV can accurately predict the balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). While the clinical importance of HRV measurements has been well documented, the exact relationship between HRV parameters and the ANS activity remains unclear, largely due to technical difficulties in recording autonomic signals. Recently our laboratory developed a technique for long-term, wireless recording of autonomic signals from free-moving animals, thus providing an experimental validation tool for various traditional concepts. These results also prompt for a theoretical update toward a comprehensive understanding of autonomic regulation of heart rate. We will present concepts and mathematical tools for measuring and simulating autonomic control of the heart.
