Fourier transform has been applied to estimate the 2D rigid transform for image alignment in the past. In this talk, I will first review the previous image registration works based on using Fourier transforms. Then, I will present our recent works on 2D image registration and 3D point-set registration based on using the Fourier moments. Our works
can be used to estimate not only the rigid transformation but also the affine transform between the images or point datasets. Some experimental results on registering multi-modal medical images and 2D/3D point datasets are given. The experiments show that the
proposed registration algorithm is more robust against noises and outliers compared to the conventional registration methods.
