  (I) On the Peculiar Statistics of Natural Images
  A striking and mysterious property of natural images is that they are nearly scale invariant. The distribution of (local) statistics is unchanged by rescaling, say to half the number of rows and half the number of columns. Investigation naturally leads to questions about scale-invariant processes, stationary versions of which are generally only available in weak form (random measures). But natural images are not stationary, since the objects that are further away are typically closer to the top. Are there ordinary (sample-path) processes that are scale invariant but not necessarily stationary?
  
  (II) Conditional Modeling and the Construction of a Computer Vision System
  Conditional modeling and conditional inference refer to a collection of statistical techniques for analyzing high-dimensional structured data. The idea is to focus on select low-dimensional conditional or marginal distributions, side-stepping the typically impossible task of modeling the bulk of the dimensions and complexity. I will outline an ambitious program to build a scalable computer-vision system, based on a fully generative, hierarchical, model of images and a coarse-to-fine computation engine. I will highlight challenges that face this and other approaches to the automated analysis of unconstrained imagery.
