Credit rating agencies were heavily criticized for their poor performance during the 2008-09 financial crisis. But the euro-zone debt crisis of late again demonstrated our dependence on credit ratings. There is little doubt that credit rating service plays a critical role in the modern financial system, and should thus be treated as a vital infrastructure of a nation and the world. The shortcomings of the current credit rating business model were evident in the past crises, and their root cause can easily be attributed to profit-seeking motive and incentives misalignment. This talk will focus on a constructive solution to the infrastructure challenge, which is the non-profit credit rating initiative currently under way at the Risk Management Institute, National University of Singapore. The talk will cover the Initiative’s philosophical foundation, operational approach and research infrastructure. A status update will be also be presented.
