This seminar emphasizes on the applications of some recent developed numerical techniques to different scales of Environmental Fluid Dynamics, ranging from microfluids to a basins-scale ocean model. An efficient immersed boundary method (IBM) for simulating a variety of turbulent flows in complex geometries is presented. A boundary condition is enforced through a ghost cell method. The reconstruction procedure allows systematic development of numerical schemes to treat the immersed boundary accurately while preserving the overall accuracy of the numerical solver. The accuracy is validated using several turbulent and geophysical flows. We further study some global and regional ocean circulations, air pollutant transport and dispersion, and the impacts of global warming on oceanic response using numerical simulations.
