Bose-Mesner algebras provide a nice framework for studying many regular combinatorial structures, including Latin squares, But the Bose-Mesner algebra of a Latin square is determined up to isomorphism solely by the size of the Latin square. We refine the Bose-Mesner algebra to the subconstituent algebra to retain some of the benefits of Bose-Mesner algebras while better distinguishing among Latin squares.
