A unifying model of optimization problems and classical problems in nonlinear analysis is the abstract equilibrium problem. We present eight realizations of this rather general model and point out some applications through these special cases. My co-authors and I have shown in recent years that the rigid classical assumption of convexity and monotonicity can be relaxed to generalized convexity and generalized monotonicity to establish major results including existence of an equilibrium.
