In this talk we discuss some recent issues on mixed finite element in 2D and 3D. In 2D, most of the mixed fem for quadrilateral meshes does not have optimal order of convergence except Raviart-Thomas element. Even for Raviart-Thomas element, the divergence of velocity component does not have full order. We present one technique to improve the divergence error. Also, we define a new mixed finite element of all order $k\ge1$ for quadrilateral meshes, which has same order of convergence as Raviart-Thomas element. Post-processing can be used to obtain optimal divergence also. For 3D problems, none of the existing mixed fem has optimal order of convergence. We propose a new mfem for some hexahedral grid which has optimal order of convergence.
