Department Library
Department Library Introduction
The mathematical data center was founded in Oct. 1994 and was later incorporated in the Academic Sinica Institute of Mathematics Consortium Project. Over the years the center has purchased over 20 thousand math-related items both in Chinese and English. These items are held separately at the National Chiao Tung University Library and the Department of Applied Mathematics Library, available for reference and borrowing. As for the Department of Applied Mathematics Library, it holds nearly 2500 math-related books and 130 different journals. To further assist students’ understanding of general math related information, development and current trends, since the year 2000, the center has included in its collection recently issued general science math books and magazines to provide the students with extracurricular reading materials. The library continues to expand its collection, in the hope of widening the possibilities of mathematical research in the greater Hsinchu area. During the opening hours, the department library also provides reference service to assist the readers on locating books, providing information and performing interlibrary borrowing service. All books can be borrowed from the department library, with the exception of text books of required courses and reference books. However, the department library does not provide returning service on books borrowed from the main library. This falls under the general library regulations of the NYCU library. The department library currently consists of three areas- library (storage area for books), reading room for journals and a general reading area. Tables and whiteboards are placed in the journal areas to provide the users with a more convenient research and discussing environment. Moreover, classrooms SA211 and SA212 across the hall provide students with a self-studying environment, and SA222 also provides study counsels during night times by the calculus teaching team. Concerning computer hardware services, the library provides copying and paper-purchasing service. It is thus extremely convenient for readers to make copies of journals and other information. |
